Physician Heal Thyself: Guide to Self-Care

Physicians know that health is everything. Unfortunately, the day-to-day busyness of life has led to many of us putting our health on the back-burner. We enjoy creating plans for our lives but what good are those plans if we are not healthy enough to implement them? This is where self-care comes into the picture. According to Google, here is what it means: “It’s a broad term that encompasses just about anything you do to be good to yourself….” and “In a nutshell, it’s about being as kind to yourself as you would be to others.”

Believe it or not, it was only recently that I learned about self-care, and I wish I knew about it sooner. So far, it has transformed my life. Here are some things that I do for self-care: having an exercise routine, being mindful, creating a daily routine, practicing gratitude, journaling, meditating, being fully present, self-educating (I feel so alive when I learn things that I’m curious about!), and taking trips to the spa for massages, manicures, and pedicures.

One self-care book that changed my life is The Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod. He works off the premise that you can win your day by winning your morning. So how do you achieve this? The answer lies in using the “Life S.A.V.E.R.S” method before starting your day:

Silence (meditation/prayer)

Affirmations

Visualization

Exercising

Reading

Scribing (journaling)

I started experimenting with the “Life S.A.V.E.R.S” method by exercising, reading, praying, and journaling. Of those four, I noticed that exercise produced the most noticable results. After getting those four down pat, I added affirmations and meditation– both of which I love. Lastly, I gave visualization a try but it is something that I have been struggling with (I am working on it, though).

In The Miracle Morning, Hal Elrod teaches that all six steps have to be completed before your day starts. However, that was not practical for me. Instead, I have been weaving them into my day and I‘ve come to witness great result in doing so. I’ve molded and used the “Life S.A.V.E.R.S” method in the way that works for me and my life keeps getting better and better!

So now, ask yourself: “What does my morning routine look like? What does my day look like as a whole? Have they been serving me?” If you realize a need for improvement, I encourage you to try “Life S.A.V.E.R.S.” I’ve come to see the power of these simple self-care routines and I want you to experience it too!

As always, self-experimentation is the key to opening up new possibilities in your life. Why not give it a go?
